UCM is a student-led ministry that operates under the guidance and wisdom of a campus director and pastoral staff. The staff, and your UCM Student Exec work closely together to pray for, organize, and facilitate the ministry on campus. Our Core bible study leaders meet regularly with our staff for discipleship and shepherd many students in their weekly meetings in dorms across campus. As well, our Worship leaders meet regularly with their worship bands to pray and prepare to lead our community in worship each Thursday night. Countless others volunteer in a variety of roles to bring breath and depth to this active and diverse community.

Community. What a great word. Ever since joining UCM three years ago I have been learning about what that means. And the more I think about it, the more I love it. To fellowship, to laugh, to experience, to grow - together. We are meant to live in community, to go through this life - this 4 years of university - in relationship with each other. What drew me to UCM (and what makes me so excited for this year) is that UCM is not some sort of 'organization' - it is a group of students who love God, who love asking questions, and who love each other. Drop by sometime - we'd love to have you along on this journey!
But before we meet, allow me to make some small talk - I'm a 6'-5", 21-year-old, Mechanical Engineering student going into my 4th year of what is going to be a 6-year degree. I am currently torn between following my career choice as an engineer, pursuing my passion in photography, and falling in love with ministry work. Basically, I have no idea what I'm going to do with my life and I love it. I am fond of Swiss cheese, oceans, heights, and mangoes. I think backpacking across the Andes would be a sweet way of spending a summer. The centrality of the Cross in the Christian faith has been something that has been blowing my mind recently, and will probably continue to do so for the rest of my life. We should talk about it sometime. See you soon!

Julie Harris

Hey there!
My name is Julie. I'm in my 3rd year of a math major at UBC with the current plan to eventually become a highschool math teacher! I also happen to love jokes (math or science related especially) and therefore, when I become a teacher, I plan to make math jokes an integral part of classroom activities:) I also absolutely love playings sports and being active so I enjoy racewalking, badminton, ultimate, jugball...and the list goes on.
When I first came to UBC and attended UCM's Welcome BBQ in September, I found the community to be incredibly welcoming and maybe that was because it was a Welcome BBQ. But even after the Welcome BBQ, when I went to the weekly meetings, I was continuously welcomed and encouraged. So, I encourage you to come and visit us! As I have said in the past (and please only apply this to coming to UCM), you never really know what you are missing until you have tried it!

Steven Crossley
- Prayer Coordinator
|
Hello and Welcome!
My name is Steven and I proudly hail from scenic Nelson in the West Kootenays. I'm in my fourth year at UBC, but in the third year of my program - this year I'll be taking a barrage of chemistry courses :). I love sports, especially ones that involve other people, and so you'll often find me playing ultimate frisbee, one of the great discoveries I've made while living on UBC's beautiful campus.
I have the honor this year of encouraging and promoting prayer within the UCM community. I believe that God wants us to know him. Not just to know about him, but to actually know him. As we come to know God, our will becomes conformed to his. The conformation of our will to his means that God's heart becomes our heart, his desires become our desires and the way we live our lives reflects his will... and all of it is for God's glory. I think that prayer is the primary means by which this conformation occurs, and so it really is my privilege and joy to encourage you and others to pray. And so I am eagerly looking forward to what God will do in and through the individuals of this community in the coming year.

Karen Miller
- Worship Coordinator

Hey, my name is Karen. And I like to party.
Maybe I should add some definitions: when I say party what I really mean is spend the night in eating peanut butter on toast and watching British TV. Ill be honest with you, in the last three years at UBC, Ive partied pretty hard.
Straight out of Tacoma, Washington I earned my thug in the youth groups of the local Presbyterian Church. Honing my acoustic guitar skills I was more interested in being the next John Lennon than the next Darlene Zschech. Some may describe me as fearless, but I do have a few things Im afraid of: clowns, miniature horses, and mannequins coming to life. Im still trying to block a few memories from my first trip to the Calgary Stampede Parade in 08.
Im heading into my fourth and final year, majoring in History and English Literature, but my real passion in life is music and especially playing music with people. As anyone at a UCM retreat or bonfire can attest, I lead a pretty mean campfire singalong. Above all, I love praising God through music and UCM is a community that has allowed me to grow as a songwriter, musician, and Christian.
So heres my plug. There is room for you to make a joyful noise at UCM, no matter what you play or how long youve played it. All you need to do is shoot me an emailand Ill get you on your way. And if you arent musically inclined but are looking for a friend with an encyclopedic knowledge of the Beatles, can quote Arrested Development word for word, and derives life lessons from episodes of the Simpsons (its perfectly cromulent to do so) well, you can send me an email too. As you can see in this probably too lengthy and slightly whimsical blurb, I could always use more friends to talk to.
In Him,
Karen Thrilla Miller

Sabine Lague
- Outreach Coordinator
|
Sabine Lague is in her fifth and final year at UBC completing a degree in Honours Animal Biology with a Minor in Music (flute and piccolo). She intends to go on to study medicine in the field of pediatrics. Born and raised in Cranbrook, British Columbia, in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, Sabine enjoys hiking, swimming, and sunsets - anything that will bring her closer to the beauty of God's creation. She loves music of every shape and form, from flute trios and orchestras to Broadway musicals and singing songs by the campfire. Sabine keeps herself occupied by volunteering at BC Children's Hospital, volunteering in various leadership capacities around campus, and participating in worship ministry at church. In UCM she has been involved with worship and leading cores. What she delights in most, however, is spending time with friends and journeying with individuals in her community along a path leading towards a closer and more intimate relationship with Christ.
Sabine has a heart for outreach, and is excited to serve the UCM community as outreach coordinator. She is passionate about seeing how God can use students to do his work globally (missions), locally (Vancouver), and on campus. Her vision for outreach includes the facilitation of opportunities for students to become involved in outreach on these three scales by a variety of different means. Globally, Sabine wants to connect students interested in global missions with supporting organizations, and also reinforce the teaching that serving as Jesus's hands and feet is just as pressing a call locally as it is abroad. On campus she yearns to see a greater connection between faculty and students, and students and their peers, facilitating an open and comfortable dialogue about Christianity. Sabine is excited to see how the UCM community this year can foster discipleship (Matthew 28:19), and serve as a witness of Jesus's promise globally, locally, and on campus. Become part of this vision, get involved, and see the Lord move on this campus! "Everything is possible for him who believes!" (Mark 9:23)

Hello and welcome to the UBC club website for UCM,
If you are reading this right now, it means that you most likely had the opportunity to see a glimpse of our basic vision as student leaders for the coming year, as well as some of my colleagues' specific ideas for each department. As treasurer, my personal vision is merely supplementary, and is really nothing more than organizing our funds in such a way that each of their ideas can reach full potential, and that nothing important slips through the cracks. As well, I do my best to ensure that we have rooms in which to meet, and that cheques get signed and delivered to the right people.
For the most part, my work occurs behind the scenes, and will not be of any concern to most regular attenders. However, if you have any questions or concerns regarding our financial situation, or if you know of a student who needs help, feel free to contact myself or one of the staff or student leaders. Our budget is relatively small and viscous, but we will do what we can to help out.
And in case you already know what a club treasurer does, and have yet to find the answer to the question of "but who is this guy, anyway?" here are a few general facts about myself: I'm currently completing my fourth year Bachelor of Arts with a major in History, but I did my first year of undergrad in engineering at TRU in Kamloops, BC. As yet, I have very flexible and open-ended career plans which scarcely extend beyond graduation, but they will most likely involve an element of teaching. I worked this past summer here in Vancouver as a grounds keeper at the University Golf Course, and I spend my leisure time going to concerts, hanging out with friends, making good food, reading Russian literature, shooting photos, and I have recently taken up skimboarding when the tide is out.
Hopefully this answers some, but not all of your questions, since you will most certainly receive better answers by joining us in person on Thursday nights, and by discovering for yourself the mysterious ways that God works within this community.

- Social Coordinator

Hey everyone! I am stoked for another year at UBC and being a part of UCM. Just a little about myself.. I'm an international relations major in my 5th year (yup.. I'm in co-op!). I grew up as an MK (missionary kid) in India and completed my high school in Langley BC. And here I am now, in beautiful (but rainy) Vancouver... woot!
I am really excited about the passion God has for UBC and for the work of His kingdom on this campus. UCM has taught me so much about what it means to be apart of a community that is Christ-seeking and God-centered. I think it is incredible that our Father is just so pleased when he sees his children coming together to have fun and glorify Him. I really hope this is what our community will continue to look like this year, and I am excited for the ways people are going to come together and share their love for the Lord with each other.
If you are interested in getting connected or helping with social events, let me know! God bless.

Every year we're excited about what God has in store for us as a UCM community. This community is unique. It's a safe place for students to ask questions about the meaning of life and it's a community that encourages students to grow both mentally and spiritually.
Our lives were transformed by God when Arthur met Him as a student at UBC and Janice while in Malaysia just before entering university in England. After a few years of working using our degrees we met each other at Regent College - and as they say - the rest is history.
It's our hope that many others will experience His great love while they study on this Campus. One of our deepest desires is to help people grow in their relationship with the One who gives abundant life. It's a wonderful time to be involved with God in the lives of students!

Born and raised in the small town of Castor Alberta. I think the claim to fame for my home town is that our sports team is named the Castor Raiders (say it together really quickly and you'll get it). After graduating High School I planned for a year at Full Gospel Bible College in Eston, SK but one year turned into four and a degree in Biblical Studies. I then made the arduous trek in a U-haul truck to Vancouver BC, where I began work on a Master's of Christian Studies at Regent College.
Three years and one degree later, I sit here writing a bio so that you can know me a bit better. Well at a glance there is the overly passionate devotion to country music, an embarrassing fondness for Molly Ringwald movies, and deep love for a comfy chair and a good book. But what defines my life is the fact that I believe in relationships and their power to inspire maturity in Christ which is why I am excited to be working with UCM and to be able to encourage and equip people to grow in their relationship with the Lord as well as bring the good news to the world.

As a gal who was born and raised in the lovely suburb of Coquitlam, I grew up playing pretty much every sport in the book. I also played the flute for a few years, but alas, my musical talents were not discovered at an early age and I was forced to give it up. It was not until after high school (and my failed musical career) that I ventured out to UBC and the big noisy city of Vancouver with the goal of broadening my prospects for employment. After completing a degree in Human Geography and Sociology, however, I decided to stick around to enjoy more of the UCM community at UBC. It is my hope that through UCM, students will have the opportunity to grow in their relationship with Christ and learn to live it out as they participate in authentic Christian community. I am excited about what God is already doing on this campus and look forward to being a part of what He has in store!

I grew up the son of a pastor. My upbringing was fantastic, but I never thought I would follow in my father's footsteps. However when I moved to Vancouver two years ago to pursue a musical opportunity with my sister, God surprised me. I met my wife Kari who at the time was not a Christian. Through the course of our friendship, Kari ended up accepting Jesus. The experience opened my eyes anew to the beauty and power of the Gospel. I wanted to take what I had learned and disciple others. That is when I learned about UCM. I feel inspired to train Christian students to understand their faith and to encourage them to create relationships with students both within and outside of the UCM community. So it ends up that I became what I never thought I would be. To my delight, I feel right at home!
